Dixon, Frederick John: 1881-1931. Born in England; to Winnipeg, 1904; in Manitoba Legislature, 1914-1930; leading member of Direct Legislation League; political activist who supported social justice, women's suffrage, and worker's compensation; opposed First World War; during Winnipeg General Strike edited Strike Bulletin (after William Ivens and J.S. Woodsworth arrested) and the Western Star; one of ten arrested on charges of conspiracy for their role in Winnipeg General Strike, 1919; acquitted by jury; led Independent Labour Party; engaged in insurance business until his death from cancer. // Galt, Alexander Casimir: b.1853. // Caption title: "Dixon's address to the jury: An argument for liberty of opinion." A speech in answer to a charge of seditious libel in connection with the Winnipeg General Strike, delivered in the Winnipeg Court House, February 13-14, 1920, before Judge Galt.
